Sir John Mill’s Rolls-Royce
One of the archetypes of the decent and reliable on-screen Englishman, Sir John Mills first appeared on stage in 1929 as a chorus dancer. His first film appearance was with Jessie Matthews in the 1932 film, The Midshipmaid. He rose through the ranks to appear as the leading man in Tudor Rose and The Green Cockatoo.
After becoming a popular stage performer in light comedies and musicals throughout the 1930s, Sir John became best known for his roles in patriotic Second World War films, including In Which We Serve, We Dive at Dawn, Way to the Stars, Dunkirk, Ice Cold in Alex and The Colditz Story.
After the war Sir John starred in such successful epics as Great Expectations, Scott of the Antarctic and the film adaptation of Oh! What a Lovely War, as well as making stage appearances in Charley’s Aunt, Ross and The Good Companions.
Sir John’s favourite film was Hobson’s Choice.
He won an Oscar for his portrayal of the village idiot in the 1970 David Lean-directed film Ryan’s Daughter.
In all he starred in 123 films; 48 plays; numerous television dramas, including Quatermass; and his own one-man show, An Evening with John Mills.
Sir John was knighted in 1977 for his services to British entertainment.
Sadly Sir John passed away at his Buckinghamshire home on 23 April 2005 after a short illness. Lady Mary, whom he loved very much, passed away a few months later.
Sir John was a close and very special friend of John Casson MBE and his wife Jenny. Their friendship grew, and Sir John spent many happy times with John and Jenny in the years before he passed away.
John inherited Sir John’s Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II after he passed away.
John and Jenny now live in Cornwall and it is not practical to keep the Rolls-Royce.
